About Cavapoos
A Cavapoo is a hybrid dog: it is an intentional cross between a poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Dog breeds, like the Cavapoo, have become known as designer dogs; this is because so many celebrities have sought out these hybrid dogs.
During the 1950’s, dog breeders in America were looking to develop a hybrid dog that was low to non-shedding and had few health problems. They chose the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel because of the breed’s friendliness and the poodle because of its non-shedding coat.
If you are looking for loving companionship, few breeds compare to the intelligent, cuddlesome, and playful Cavapoo. While some breeders may lead you to believe that Cavapoos (or other designer dogs) will not shed, this may not be the case. Cavapoos can be extremely different based on the generation you pick. In terms of coat type, hypoallergenic features, and nonshedding features, almost all Cavapoo generations vary due to their genetic makeup. It’s important to keep in mind that no dog is allergen-free; although, some people may have less reaction to the proteins found in a Cavapoo’s dander, saliva, and urine.
The way in which dog breeders clarify the genetic make-up of a Cavapoo is via numbers and letters like F1, F1B, F1BB, F2, F2B, F2BB, or F3 (multi-gen) Cavapoo. If you aren’t familiar with what theses letter and numbers mean, you won’t know the kind of physical, personality, or temperament characteristics your Cavapoo will have. For more information on each of these generations, feel free to read the article in this link.
So, what do the letters and numbers mean? The F stands for Filial Hybrid—meaning it is a crossbreed dog and not a purebred dog. All Cavapoo generations will start with the letter F because they are a crossbred pet between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle. The number indicates which generation the Cavapoo is. An F1 Cavapoo implies that it is a first-generation Cavapoo—meaning that it is the first offspring of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle.
The B stands for Backcross which means that it was bred back to a full-blooded purebred (either a 100% Cavalier King Charles or a 100% Poodle). Usually, an F1B Cavapoo is a backcross to a 100% Poodle due to the fact that they don’t shed and are great for people with pet allergies.
At beyond tails, we focus on F1B Cavapoos, as they have the traits that most people associate with a Cavapoo.
